Wide Calf Riding Boots: How to Find the Right Fit

Finding long riding boots can be frustrating when the foot size feels right but the calf does not. At Tuffa, fit has always been a major part of how we design footwear, which is why our range includes different calf shapes and widths as well as Made to Measure options.

Start with accurate measurements

Before comparing size guides, measure both legs while wearing the socks and legwear you normally ride in. For most long boots, the two most useful measurements are:

• Calf circumference: measure around the widest part of the calf.
• Leg height: measure from the floor up the outside of the leg to where you would like the boot to finish.

Measure both sides because it is completely normal for one leg to be slightly different from the other.

What does “wide calf” actually mean?

A wider calf fit is not simply a standard boot made larger everywhere. A well-designed wide or plus-size boot should still sit neatly through the ankle and foot while offering more room through the calf. The aim is comfort without losing the close, supportive feel riders want from a long boot.

Signs the calf fit is too tight

• You cannot fasten the zip without excessive force.
• The boot feels painfully restrictive rather than snug.
• The zip or stretch panel is under obvious strain.
• You cannot bend the knee comfortably.

Signs the calf fit is too loose

• The boot rotates noticeably around the leg.
• There is a large gap at the top of the calf.
• The ankle collapses excessively because the upper is not being supported by the leg.

Standard, wide or Made to Measure?

If your measurements fall neatly within one of our standard size guides, a stock size is usually the easiest route. If your calf and height measurements do not line up with the same standard size, or you want a more individual fit, Tuffa Made to Measure may be worth considering.
